I might have to side with Samuel. That scene from Pitch Perfect was challenging for me to watch. (Nope, never saw it before). Cringy!!! Made me kinda... angry. It's a bit unclear, but I'll try to unpack it: Teens (not to mention played by 32-year old actors) shouldn't get to be that wholesome while singing the songs of my youth, ones that served as the soundtrack for school dances, 40 ounces, blunts, graffiti and other misguided adventures that took place in Queens, NY. And, of course, I noticed immediately the near-absence or shadowing of POC. I must immediately play Blackstreet, so I can remember what it really sounds like...

Quaranbeans Available Now!

Our confectioners have been hard at work — remotely, of course — perfecting new and unique flavors to reflect 2020, this most bizarre year in our history.

This themed box of jelly beans is strictly for adults and includes none of the delicious “normal” jelly beans you know and love.

The Quaranbeans Every Flavor Beans 2020 Collection will comfort you with delicious domestic flavors like Yeast, Sourdough Starter, and — if you’re lucky — Freshly Baked Bread. Because this is the year that you learned to bake. Just like your ancestors.

More familiar flavors we’ve lovingly crafted include Tuna Fish…

My birthday is just around the corner, and this year I want to give back to those who are less fortunate than me. It’s a cause that is close to my heart. Did you know that some kids can’t afford to go on Spring break?

I didn’t. Until I did.

One Friday night, during a mandatory work happy hour, one of my co-workers revealed to me that she had never been on Spring break. And I was like, “OMG, you’ve never been on Spring brrreaK???”

So naturally, I wanted to do something about it…

Spring break is a really formative…

Documenting my “naked-faced” experiment

The last day I did my hair and my makeup was the last day I went to work. By 8 p.m. on Monday, March 16th, 2020, businesses in New York — including gyms — were subject to mandated closure to stop the spread of coronavirus.

I had a 6 p.m. yoga class to teach.

I selected a pair of leggings, a sports bra, and a loose-fitting top that would hide my soft belly (I eat a lot of cheese). Then I sat down in front of my rustic white IKEA vanity dresser to do my makeup: a layer of foundation…

For when everything goes your way in a pandemic

I wake up at twilight and meditate for one hour. I take an exercise class, then make a green juice. I write 1,000 words a day and before I know it, I’ve crafted an entire fictional universe that becomes a best-selling trilogy.

I unglue my butt from the sofa and dig for the instruction manual to my Singer sewing machine. I scroll through a few DIY videos, then I’m ready to begin surgical mask production. The fabric is repurposed from clothing that got Marie Kondo’d out of my closet. I donate the masks to a local nursing home, and I’m…

COVID-19 is zoonotic disease, not a “Chinese disease.”

There has been an increase in anti-Asian sentiment since the spread of the new coronavirus aka COVID-19, which originated in Wuhan, China (unlucky day for them.) Our president is planting seeds of misdirected blame by calling it the “Chinese virus,” which is a misnomer.

But Chinese people — or anyone who looks Chinese to you — is not at fault because any human can contract or spread the coronavirus. And it could have made it’s debut in any part of the world.

COVID-19 is a really a zoonotic disease — a virus, bacteria, parasite, or fungi that is passed from…

How to Protect Yourself While Job-Searching

Teaching Yoga is a fun and rewarding job when you’re actually teaching, but outside of the class setting there are challenges to this profession. You need to continually look for, and secure, work — a time-consuming task that goes uncompensated. Even if you’ve established relationships with gyms and studios, arranging your schedule — by either subbing out classes or subbing classes for others — takes up a great deal of energy.

You also need to prepare for your classes by doing your own practice, curating music playlists, and planning your sequences. This is on your watch. …

The Apostrophe Protection Society Closes its Doors and We Are Left to Wonder: What is the Fate of the Apostrophe?

The Apostrophe Protection Society is waving a white flag. The president of the organization, John Richards, made this announcement on the group’s website in November 2019:

With regret I have to announce that, after some 18 years, I have decided to close the Apostrophe Protection Society.

There are two reasons for this. One is that at 96 I am cutting back on my commitments and the second is that fewer organisations and individuals are now caring about the correct use of the apostrophe in the English Language.

We, and our many supporters worldwide, have done our best but the ignorance…

In a word, yes.

drink verb \ dringk \
1. take (a liquid) into the mouth and swallow.

You sit down at a restaurant with a group of people, and you’re looking at the menus when the server comes along and says, “Can I start you off with any drinks?”

It’s assumed that drinks means alcoholic drinks, so you respond with a negative statement, such as “No, but I’ll have a vegan salted caramel milkshake.” No-but?

Saying no, when everyone else is saying yes, makes you the odd one out. It contains an air of exclusion and deprivation.

So when…
